Sweetening the Fast

Mastoor’s “Sweetening the Fast” collection was captured in Senegal, a land known not only for its breathtaking landscapes but also for its deep sense of generosity and community, especially during Ramadan. While there, we witnessed a beautiful reality: Ramadan becomes even sweeter when one gives—whether through Sadaqah, feeding others, or small acts of kindness.
In Senegal, there’s a form of generosity known as Teranga—a deeply rooted tradition that embodies hospitality, warmth, and selflessness. The essence of Teranga is reflected in simple acts, such as offering a plate of dates to a neighbor or ensuring others have food to break their fast.

As Allah (SWT) reminds us in the Qur’an,
“O you who believe, fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become righteous.” (Al-Baqarah 2:183)
This verse encapsulates the true purpose of Ramadan: the purification of the heart and a deep connection with Allah.

The Prophet (ﷺ) also said:
“Whoever gives food for a fasting person to break his fast, he will have a reward like theirs, without that detracting from their reward in the slightest.” (Tirmidhi 807, Ibn Majah 1746)

Ramadan is a time of giving, connection, and worship. Through each stitch, this collection serves as a reminder that the sweetest moments come from what we give in the path of Allah—and that the true essence of Ramadan lies in purifying our souls and strengthening our bond with our Creator.
